How to find the best Minecraft server host
Minecraft hosting is sold on gigabytes of RAM, which is close to the least useful number on the page. Here is what separates a host your players enjoy from one they quietly leave.
Single core speed decides your tick rate
Minecraft runs its main game loop on one thread. A server with 16 slow cores will tick worse than one with 4 fast cores, and no amount of extra RAM changes that. When a host advertises a processor, look up its single thread rating rather than its core count.
Hosts that name the exact CPU are telling you something. Hosts that say "high performance hardware" are telling you nothing, and are usually running older chips packed densely.
Ask what the oversell ratio is. A budget host puts many servers on one machine and they all compete for the same cores, which is why a plan can be fine at 3pm and unplayable at 8pm.
RAM matters, but less than the plan pages suggest
RAM sets the ceiling on world size, player count and how many plugins or mods you can load. It does not make anything faster once you have enough, and buying more to fix lag caused by a slow CPU is the most common wasted upgrade in Minecraft hosting.

Location, because ping is not negotiable
Distance is latency and latency is felt. A player 150ms from your server sees blocks break late and loses fights they should win. Pick a location near most of your players rather than near you.
If your community is split across continents, pick the larger group and accept the smaller one has a worse time, or run a proxy with regional backends once you are big enough for that to be worth it.
Test before committing. Most hosts publish a test IP per location you can ping. Our servers by country pages show where existing servers answer from, which is a reasonable proxy for where players in a region actually play.
What to check before you pay
Full file access. SFTP at minimum, ideally a console and a scheduler. A host that only gives you a config editor makes half of this site's guides impossible to follow.
Backups you can download. A backup you cannot take off the platform is not protection against the platform. Check the retention and the restore process, not just that the feature exists.
DDoS protection that is included. Minecraft servers get attacked, often by a player who lost an argument. Filtering should be part of the plan rather than an upsell.
A refund window. Anything less than a few days means you cannot properly test under real load, which is the only test that counts.
Shared, VPS or dedicated
Shared Minecraft hosting gives you a panel, a jar and support. It is the right start for a first server and for anyone who does not want to learn Linux.
A VPS is cheaper per unit of performance and gives you full control, at the cost of doing your own updates, firewalling and backups. It is the right move once you are running more than one server or a proxy network.
Dedicated hardware only makes sense at real scale, when you are filling a machine and the noisy neighbour problem is worth paying to remove entirely.

Reading reviews without being misled
Most Minecraft hosting reviews are affiliate content, and the ranking follows the commission. A review that never names a downside is an advert.
Better signals: search the host name alongside the word outage and read what people said during one, check how support answered rather than how fast, and ask in a server owner community rather than reading a top ten list. The complaints tell you more than the praise.
