Lifesteal takes a heart from the loser of every fight and gives it to the winner. One plugin setting, and it turns survival into a game about risk. The servers running it differ enormously in how far they take that idea.

How lifesteal works
Kill a player, gain a heart. Die, lose one. Hit zero hearts and you are out, either banned until somebody revives you or locked out for a set time. Everything else is normal survival, which is why the mode spread so fast.
The interesting decisions are all in the details, and they are usually published on the server's rules page. Start from the lifesteal server list.
The four settings that define a lifesteal server
Maximum hearts. A low cap keeps everyone killable. A high cap lets veterans become walls that no new player can fight.
What happens at zero. Permanent ban, timed ban, or spectator until revived. This is the difference between a tense server and a cruel one.
Revival items. Craftable revive crystals keep the population alive and give the economy a purpose. No revival at all means the server empties as it ages.
Whether hearts drop on death. Some servers drop the heart as an item so it can be stolen or lost, which changes every fight.
Teaming, trapping and what the rules allow
Lifesteal lives or dies on moderation. Ask whether teaming is capped, whether trapping players in a hole for hours is allowed, whether spawn is protected, and whether alt accounts feeding hearts to a main are banned.
A server with detailed answers to those has been through the problem and fixed it. A server with no stated position has not, and you will meet it as a five person group camping your base.
How long a lifesteal season lasts
Most lifesteal servers run seasons, and that is a feature. The heart economy concentrates over time because winners keep winning, so a reset is what keeps the mode playable for anyone joining late.
Check when the current season started and when it ends. Joining a season in its last fortnight means facing players with twenty hearts and a netherite kit.
