Advertising a Minecraft server

Most advice on advertising a Minecraft server is a list of places to paste your IP. The useful version is shorter, and starts with the fact that almost all of it depends on people already playing.

Server lists, and how the ranking really works

Lists are the largest single source of new players for a small server, and nearly all of them rank by votes cast that month. That is a deliberate design: it means a server with a hundred active players who vote outranks one with a thousand who do not.

So the lever is not submitting to more lists. It is giving your existing players a reason to vote. A vote reward delivered in game, a daily reminder in chat, and a leaderboard for the month all work. Our Votifier tester confirms the reward actually reaches your server, which is the part that quietly fails.

Pick a few lists and work them properly rather than submitting to forty. A listing with a real banner, a written description and working votes on three lists beats forty empty rows.

Your listing is a landing page

Treat the listing like a shop window. A 468x60 banner that reads clearly at that size, a description that says what the server is rather than adjectives about it, honest tags, and a Discord invite.

The description is where most servers waste the opportunity. "Best server ever, join now, custom enchants, friendly staff" tells a reader nothing. "Season 4 skyblock with minions, an auction house and weekly island contests, resets every three months" tells them whether they want it.

Keep uptime high, because most lists check it and many sort banner-less or offline servers down. Ours puts servers with no banner at the end of the list for exactly that reason.

What works beyond lists

Your own players. Referral rewards and a reason to bring a friend outperform every external channel, because the invitation comes from someone trusted.

Discord communities. Not by pasting an IP into an advertising channel that nobody reads, but by being a recognised member of a few communities in your niche.

Small creators. A YouTuber with two thousand engaged viewers in your gamemode is worth far more than a large channel making one generic video, and is usually reachable and affordable.

Being findable by name. When someone hears your server mentioned, they search the name. A site, a listing and a Discord that all rank for it means they find you rather than giving up.

What wastes your time

Advertising in other servers. It gets you banned, it annoys the exact people you want, and it converts close to nothing.

Buying players or votes. Bought traffic does not stay, bought votes get delistings, and a player count that does not match the population in game is obvious within a minute of joining.

Submitting to every list at once. Forty half-finished listings is less effective than three complete ones and takes longer to maintain.

Launching before you are ready. The single most expensive mistake. Attention is hard to get and you only get it once per person, so a player who joins a broken spawn does not come back when it is fixed.

Measure it, or you are guessing

Ask new players where they came from with a join prompt, or give each list a different vote reward tag so you can see which sends people. Without that you will keep spending effort on whichever channel feels busiest rather than the one that works.

Watch retention more than arrivals. A hundred joins where nobody returns the next day means the problem is your server, not your advertising, and more traffic will not fix it. Our guide on getting players covers the first session, which is where that is won or lost.

Frequently asked questions

How do server list votes work?

A player votes on the list site with their username, the site records it for the current month, and if the server has Votifier connected the vote is delivered so the player can be rewarded in game. Totals reset monthly on most lists, including ours.

Is it worth paying for a sponsored slot?

Sometimes, once your server is genuinely ready and converts the traffic it already gets. Paying to send people to a server that does not hold them turns a retention problem into a more expensive retention problem.

How long before advertising shows results?

Listings start sending some traffic immediately, but the vote-driven position takes a month or two of consistent voting to build. Anything promising instant placement is selling you a paid slot.

Can I advertise a whitelisted server?

Yes, and it works if the listing says so and links a Discord where people apply. What does not work is a listing that looks open, since players copy the IP, get refused and never come back.
